This is Chandler’s last Philip Marlowe novel, as good as the rest. The plot is convoluted and kind of interesting, but as with his other novels, the real treat is seeing Chandler set up characters for Marlowe to knock them down:

“On the dance floor half a dozen couples were throwing themselves around with the reckless abandon of a night watchman with arthritis.”
